🌱 Climate DC: July 2026
Things are heating up!
Summer is in full swing! The mosquitos are biting, the World Cup is on, and somehow it’s already July. We’ve loved seeing folks gather around screens across the city this month. If you’re looking for more reasons to get together, read on.
This month we’re trying something new and convening a craft circle at the National Portrait Gallery on Sunday, July 12. Have a project you’ve been working on, or one you’d like to start? Bring it! No skills necessary, just a desire to chat and craft with climate-y folks.
💬 Want to Host a Climate Conversation?
We’ve gotten some great feedback on the Climate Conversations series, and a big “thank you” to the community members who have stepped up to lead discussions on their areas of expertise. We’d love to keep the momentum going.
If you’re interested in hosting a Climate Conversation, fill out this form and we’ll be in touch if it’s a fit for our upcoming programming! Hosting includes picking a topic for discussion, choosing a date and location that works for you, and facilitating a conversation among 10-25 attendees. Our team will lead sign-ups and promotion.

🌍 News
Europe’s Record Heat Wave
A record-breaking heat wave is sweeping across Europe right now, with extreme temperatures hitting Germany, France, the UK, and beyond. It’s a stark reminder of what’s at stake and what’s already here.
💬 Community question: As heat waves become more frequent and severe, and we’re expecting one to starting DC this week, what does adequate preparation actually look like at the city level?

July 8–24 | Heat Mapping Project
📍 Fairfax County, Arlington, and Alexandria
Faith Alliance for Climate Solutions and George Mason University are launching a new environmental justice initiative to map temperature disparities across the region. Thirty teams of citizen scientists are needed to gather temperature and humidity data along prescribed routes on a single Measurement Day, expected sometime between July 8–24. Volunteers will be contacted at least five days in advance to confirm the date.
📆 July 16 | Data for Progress Happy Hour
🕔 5:30 PM – 7:30 PM
📍 Franklin Hall, Washington, DC
Data for Progress is hosting a casual happy hour open to friends and allies. DFP is a multidisciplinary group of data experts focused on measuring and moving public opinion to support the progressive movement, through polling, message testing, and data analysis.
📆 July 21 | Mobilizing Community and Economic Development to Address Climate Change
🕙 10:00 AM – 12:00 PM
📍 Urban Institute, 500 L’Enfant Plaza SW, Washington, DC
Community and economic development organizations are on the front lines of climate change, but they’re rarely resourced to integrate climate work into what they do. This event brings together practitioners, researchers, and funders to dig into the gap. The first panel unpacks findings from a recent Urban Institute survey of 450+ community and economic development leaders, and the second hears from Tucson, Arizona leaders on embedding climate into local economic development. Check-in begins at 9:30 AM; lunch to follow.
Stay cool out there. See you soon.
